Are Ghanaians witnessing a step backward instead of the promised progress? This is the core argument put forth by Dennis Miracles Aboagye, an aide to former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, regarding the current state of affairs under the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government. He claims that instead of the 'reset' the NDC pledged, Ghana is actually experiencing a decline.
Miracles Aboagye's assessment, shared in a social media post on Friday, December 12, centers on the idea that key governance and economic indicators are trending in the wrong direction during the NDC's first year in power. He specifically accuses the government of dismantling existing systems, even those that were functioning, and replacing them with what he views as less effective alternatives.
He points to several areas of concern. First, he cites challenges in healthcare delivery, specifically highlighting the suspension of digital medical records. Then, he mentions disruptions in drone services, which could impact various sectors. Also, he alleges setbacks in the fight against illegal mining, a persistent issue in Ghana.
But here's where it gets controversial... Miracles Aboagye, who also served as the 2024 NPP presidential campaign spokesperson, doesn't stop there. He criticizes the handling of public sector salaries, claiming that teachers and nurses are being underpaid, despite working a full year. He also raises concerns about rising utility tariffs and the increasing cost of living, even though official data suggests improvements in inflation and exchange rate stability. This is a crucial point, as it suggests a disconnect between official statistics and the lived experiences of ordinary Ghanaians. The argument is that the rise in electricity and water tariffs, combined with modest wage adjustments for public sector workers, has worsened their living conditions.
Furthermore, Miracles Aboagye criticizes the termination of thousands of public sector appointments, claiming this contradicts the NDC's promise of a 24-hour economy. His conclusion is stark: "The first 12 months of the NDC in office has been a period of Reverse rather than the Reset they promised us."
Meanwhile, the John Dramani Mahama-led NDC administration, which argues it inherited a severely mismanaged and collapsed economy, highlights improvements in economic indicators, including inflation and the stability of the Cedi.
