Today marks a significant milestone as over 57,000 students in Tasmania step back into their classrooms, including approximately 4,000 enthusiastic kindergarteners embarking on their educational journey for the very first time. Education Minister Jo Palmer took this opportunity to unveil exciting new literacy resources at West Launceston Primary School, where 350 eager learners kicked off the 2026 academic year with fresh tools designed to enhance their reading and writing skills.
"We’re genuinely thrilled about these innovative resources that are being introduced in every primary school throughout Tasmania," stated Ms. Palmer, emphasizing the government's commitment to improving literacy among young learners. These new literacy boards and tiles are set to be distributed to all children in prep through grade two classes across the state, part of a broader initiative aimed at raising literacy levels.
According to Palmer, these resources are not only intended to provide clear and structured teaching methods but will also significantly alleviate the workload for teachers. "Having quality materials readily available makes a tremendous difference in reducing teacher stress and allowing them to focus more on effective teaching," she explained.
Last year, the government dedicated an investment of $12.5 million towards enhancing literacy, with plans to introduce numeracy resources throughout 2026, ensuring a comprehensive approach to education.
Andrea Tiffin, the principal of West Launceston Primary School, conveyed her excitement, noting that the teaching staff had put in considerable effort to prepare the classrooms for their returning students. "We are eager to see how these initiatives translate into student growth and learning by the end of the year," Tiffin remarked, highlighting the anticipation surrounding the impact of these resources.
In her address, the minister also touched on the importance of school attendance, which was reported to be around 85% in the middle of last year. "Every single school day plays a crucial role in a child's development," Palmer commented, stressing that each day at school presents an invaluable chance to learn and grow, while also embracing the various opportunities available to them.
To bolster this message, the ‘Every School Day Matters’ campaign has been launched to motivate both students and their families to prioritize regular attendance.
Lastly, Tasmanians are reminded that school zones have reinstated 40 km/h speed limits, underscoring the shared responsibility of keeping the community's children safe as they return to school.
