Attention all Pixel users! Prepare to unlock a new dimension of gaming with your trusty smartphone. The Switch 2, a gaming console with a unique twist, has just gotten even more versatile.
You see, the Switch 2, unlike its peers, doesn't come equipped with a built-in camera. This has been a point of contention for many, as it limits the console's capabilities, especially when it comes to video calls through GameChat. But here's where it gets controversial...
Google Pixel owners, rejoice! Android Authority has just dropped a bombshell, revealing that your Pixel can now be used as a webcam for the Switch 2, and it's all thanks to a recent update. No need for any third-party apps or external cameras, just a simple software tweak.
Google has been quietly working on this feature for a while now. It was added to Android 14 in a quarterly update, allowing Android devices to function as external webcams using USB Video Class mode (UVC). However, this functionality didn't extend to the Switch 2 until the November Pixel Drop.
And this is the part most people miss... It was the November update that made all the difference. Our very own Editor-in-Chief, Aaron Souppouris, can vouch for this. Before the November update, the Switch 2 webcam feature was non-existent on his Pixel. But after updating to that version, it worked like a charm.
To further solidify this discovery, the release notes for the November firmware explicitly mention a fix for an issue where webcam mode didn't work properly with connected devices under certain conditions. It's like Google was hinting at this hidden gem all along!
We've reached out to Google for official confirmation, and we'll keep you updated as soon as we hear back. In the meantime, Pixel owners, are you excited to give this a try? And for those with other Android devices, do you think this feature should be more widely available? The floor is open for discussion!
