Vans celebrates a half-century of skate shoe innovation! 🌟 But wait, there's a twist... Vans is revamping its iconic Era shoe, the world's original skateboarding shoe, as it turns 50. And this isn't just a simple makeover.
The new Skate Era WaffleCup is a modern marvel, blending heritage and cutting-edge technology. It retains the classic Era silhouette but with a twist: a WaffleCup vulcanized cupsole designed to withstand the extreme impacts of skateboarding. This sole is reinforced with PopCush foam and a grippy SickStick rubber outsole, ensuring skaters get the support and traction they need. The upper is crafted from suede and nylon, but here's where it gets controversial—Vans adds DuraCap rubber layers in high-wear areas, a feature that might spark debate among purists who prefer the original's simplicity.
The Skate Era WaffleCup debuts in three colorways: black and white, black and brown, and a tonal blue, white, and gum combination. But Vans isn't stopping there. They've also released the Skate Era, a more subtle update that incorporates DuraCap and SickStick technology, along with a PopCush insole, all while staying faithful to the 1976 original. One of these colorways, a vibrant red, blue, and white, was featured in the hands of skateboarding legend Tony Alva in a vintage Vans campaign.
The Era's origins are just as fascinating. It was designed in collaboration with Z-Boys skaters Tony Alva and Stacy Peralta, who saw the potential in Vans' Authentic deck shoe. The Authentic's sole, initially designed for gripping boat surfaces, became a skater's dream before grip tape was even a thing!
Both the Skate Era WaffleCup and Skate Era are now available, with prices starting at $75 and $65, respectively. Will these new releases spark a debate about preserving heritage versus embracing innovation? You decide! Share your thoughts in the comments below.
