Zimbabwe's Agricultural and Rural Development Authority (ARDA) has made a significant contribution to the country's food security and economic growth. In a recent development, ARDA has delivered an impressive 60,347 tonnes of grain to the Grain Marketing Board (GMB), bolstering the nation's Strategic Grain Reserve. This achievement comes on the heels of a record-breaking wheat harvest, estimated at 640,195 tonnes, which is one of the highest yields in recent years.
The exceptional harvest can be attributed to several factors. Firstly, favorable rainfall conditions played a crucial role in ensuring a bountiful crop. Additionally, the government's intensified agricultural initiatives have been instrumental in driving this success. These initiatives have collectively contributed to Zimbabwe's revised economic growth projection of 6.6%, marking a significant improvement.
ARDA's achievement is a testament to its improved management systems, including precision farming techniques, enhanced irrigation infrastructure, and increased production efficiencies. The authority's core mandate remains focused on ensuring national food sovereignty through consistent and reliable output. This delivery not only strengthens GMB's stock but also stabilizes the broader market, making Zimbabwe more resilient to supply chain disruptions and climate-related challenges.
Agricultural economist Dr. Reneth Mano praised ARDA's efforts, stating that the delivery underscores a sector on the rebound. He emphasized that ARDA's contribution goes beyond the sheer volume of grain; it is about building a secure and predictable agricultural foundation for the economy. As the summer cropping season progresses, ARDA plans to sustain production gains by expanding irrigation rehabilitation and improving access to quality agricultural inputs. These measures are deemed essential for driving agricultural transformation and strengthening long-term food security in Zimbabwe.
